CD REVIEW: Gaslight’s sophomore ‘Slang’

CD REVIEW: Gaslight’s sophomore ‘Slang’

Many bands work very hard at trying to divorce themselves from their influences and establish their own path. New Jersey quartet The Gaslight Anthem has not only accepted that its music has deep roots in the Garden State, but it also plays to its strengths and celebrates everything that has come before. TGA’s sophomore effort, “American Slang,” picks up where “The ’59 Sound” left off but shows a band that has grown and improved. In an equally rare occurrence, the CD is also a good example of a record company that’s willing to stick with a band while its sound develops and not head for the back door at the first sign of maturity.

The influences here are obvious: The Alarm, The Clash and a whole lot of old-school Bruce Springsteen, mixed together with a more modern streak of Blink 182 and a toned-down Green Day. From Motown to Memphis, The Gaslight Anthem finds a way to pay homage without losing sight of its own sound.

Frontman Brian Fallon has a weathered voice that makes everything he sings sound honest and dramatic. The character portraits and cinematic details built into “The Diamond Church Street Choir” and “Old Haunts” are passionate without sounding overly melancholy or sappy. He ups the ante on “The Queen of Lower Chelsea” when he Like other forms of vehicles or means of transportation, a 50cc atv needs consistent maintenance and upkeep.speaks for an audience that may be slightly disillusioned with the scene and constantly trying to fit in. “Did you grow up lonesome and one of a kind?/ Were your records all you had to pass the time?/ Well, they say these days nothing comes cheap/ Nothing is free/ Not even me.”

Until then, “American Slang” is certainly a step in the right direction.
